In a personal note, Princess Anne thanked each member of the cabinet "most warmly" for the "really lovely rug." One member of the Cabinet reportedly said that the Americans made the rug appear "pretty crummy" and that when U.S. President Nixon and his administration gifted Princess Anne and Mark Phillips four solid-gold candlesticks and a crystal bowl, they ought to have thought of a better present.

Every royal wedding must have a personal poem written by the English Poet Laureate, according to tradition. Motion penned "Spring Wedding" for King Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall's Camilla Bowles wedding in 2005. But his use of the phrases "the heart which slips" and "winter-wreckage" caused some people to take notice—certainly including the Queen.
